WELCOME

GINEN (pronounced – guee/nen) means Roots/Racine or Ancestry. This word is originated from a nation in West Africa officially “Republic of Guinea” the origin of many Haitian slaves.  When the slave ships arrived in Haiti at Croix des Bossals where the slaves was displayed at an auction to be sold to the highest bidder, they were referred to as “Bossals”, because blacks were regarded as Brutes bought to be the replacements of the fast dying Indian Natives. That claim became a very interesting way to explain why Guinen came to represent the motherland collectively.

Vodou is a name attributed to a New World syncretistic religion, or family of religions, based on the faiths of the Ewe and related peoples of West Africa (see West African Vodun), of the Kongo people of Central Africa (see Lemba), and of Christianity. It is found in areas of the African diaspora, especially Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Brazil. This article is primarily concerned with the form of the religion as it is practiced in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
In Vodou, all Creation is divine and therefore contains divine power, which can be accessed by practitioners. The core functions of Vodoo are to explain the forces of the universe, to influence those forces, and to influence human behavior. Vodoo oral traditions carry genealogy, history, and fables. Adherents honor deities and venerate ancestors, both ancient and recent. When the word Vodou is capitalized, it denotes the religion. In lower case, it means the spirits of the religion.

Vodou used Catholicism as the framework for Voudouism but it didn't want to be rigid in it's followers and beliefs, the rules would limit them to restraint or enslavement which was their sole purpose of the new religion. An interesting fact, some white people believed and participated in Vodou, others tried to put an end to organized Voudou practices.

Thevarious aspects of the Vodoo Lwa:
Rada concentrates on the positive side of Vodoo only.
Petro concentrates on both the negative and positive sides
Secta Rouge concentrates on the negative side
Zobop concentrates on the extreme negative

The Lwa act as intermediaries (like the saints in Catholicism) between the creator and the human world. These Loa interact with people and things to help create and maintain a spiritual balance. Vodoo is a religion of the universe. The way it works is through the energies and intelligence which are directed and manifested of ourselves and our universe.

List of the Lwa
There are three main families or nations of Loa - Rada - Petro and Ghede.

LWA RADA-
Older, more beneficent spirits. They include Legba, Loko, Ayizan, Dhamballah Wedo and Ayida-Wedo, Erzulie Freda, La Sirene and Aqoueh. Their traditional color is white (as opposed to the specific colours of individual Loa).

LWA PETRO-
The Petro Loa are generally the more fiery, occasionally aggressive and warlike Loa. They include Ezili Dantor, Marinette, Ogoun, and Kalfu (Carrefour). Their traditional colour is red.

LOA GHEDE-
The Ghede are the spirits of the dead. They are traditionally led by the Barons (La Croix, Samedi, Cimitière, Kriminel), and Maman Brigitte. The Ghede as a family are loud, rude (although rarely to the point of real insult), sexual, and usually a lot of fun. As those who have lived already, they have nothing to fear, and frequently will display how past consequence and feeling they are when they come through in a service - eating glass, raw chillis, and anointing their sensitive areas with chilli rum for example. Their traditional colours are black and purple.
